Netflix canceled Sweet Magnolias after five seasons.

Star JoAnna Garcia Swisher spoke out about the news on Instagram.

Fans and cast rallied around the actress in support.

JoAnna Garcia Swisher is saying goodbye to the show that changed her life.

Just three months after Sweet Magnolias season 5 premiered on Netflix in June, fans were shocked to learn that the show had been canceled. While no specific reasons were given, Deadline reported that the show only drew 2.8 million views during its season 5 premiere week; that’s 30% less than the season 4 premiere in February 2025.

Shortly after the news broke, JoAnna (who played Maddie Townsend Maddox) went on Instagram to give a heartbreaking farewell to the show.

“How do you say goodbye to something that became so much more than a job?” she wrote on September 20. “Sweet Magnolias came into my world during a chapter that held some of my deepest loss and, somehow, some of my greatest joy ... In a time when I wasn’t always sure how to keep moving forward, Serenity gave me somewhere to go. These people gave me somewhere to belong. They made me laugh when I was sure I had forgotten how. They let me be sad when I needed to be. They showed up. Again and again and again. And maybe that’s what I will carry with me most.”

“To every single person who made this show, and every single person who watched it, loved it, shared it, and found a little piece of themselves in Serenity … thank you,” she added. “You will never fully know what you gave me. Five seasons. Seven years. One really, really beautiful chapter of my life. I’m not quite sure I’m ready to close it. But I am so incredibly grateful I got to live it. Thank you, Serenity. 🤍. Pour it out. 🥂.”

As soon as JoAnna said her goodbyes, some of her Sweet Magnolias cast members rallied around her in support.

“Oh my heart…I think I’m poured out 🥹!” Heather Headley (who played Helen Decatur) wrote. “💙💙,” Logan Allen (who portrayed Maddie’s son Kyle) wrote.

Fans were equally devastated by the news.

“Netflix needs to do them right and have finale episode for closure!” one person exclaimed. “1 more season 1 more season..... it can't be over 😢,” another lamented. “@netflix you owe us one more season of this show! Do not cancel it yet!” a different follower noted.

Author Sherryl Woods, who wrote the book series that inspired the show, was proud of what was accomplished.

“It takes a village and a lot of talent to create a television series,” she wrote on Instagram. “These are the folks who made it happen for five seasons on #Sweet Magnolias Netflix. I’m incredibly sad that we won’t be telling more stories, but I will be eternally grateful for this amazing team and even more grateful to every single viewer who spent time with us in Serenity. Thank you.”

We’ll absolutely miss this show!
